Searching for a birth relative or an adopted adult?
If you are an adopted adult or birth relative you can request a service from After Adoption to trace and make contact with the person you are trying to contact. This is called an intermediary service. If you live in an area where we provide this service under a contract to your Local Authority of residence there is no charge for the service, in other areas there is a charge.

Intermediary Services/Agencies
Intermediary services can only be provided by an Adoption Support Agency such as After Adoption, a Voluntary Adoption Agency or a Local Authority, and if they provide that service they can help you get in touch with your relative. The agency acts as a 'go between' so that you can find out via the intermediary whether or not the person you are seeking would welcome contact with you. The intermediary can also support you both in the early stages of getting to know each other.

As an adopted person you can search for your relatives yourself. You can then ask for someone to act as an intermediary and make the initial approach to your relative for you. However, ideally we would suggest you use an intermediary service to undertake the whole process for you, providing counselling and support along the way. It is After Adoption's policy only to undertake a search when this is part of an intermediary service, i.e when contact with your birth relative will be made by one of our Adoption Support Workers or Adoption Support Social Workers or a worker from another agency or Local Authority to whom we will provide the full information resulting from the search.

If you are a birth relative of an adopted person who is over the age of 18, under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 you can now request that an Adoption Support Agency, such as After Adoption, provides an intermediary service to help you make contact with your relative. They will then help to prepare you for the outcome and let the adopted person know of your interest for contact.

For information on our intermediary services please call our free ActionLine on 0800 0 568 578.
